Greenfield
Greenfield is a comfortable setting for industry or rural living, offering economic advantages and a pleasant living environment. Greenfield consists of over 5,000 people governed by a Mayor and City Council. Located in Highland County in South Central Ohio, 60 miles south of Columbus, 60 miles southeast of Dayton and Cincinnati. Greenfield is often called the “Gateway to Paint Creek” because it’s found in fertile farm plains near the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains.
The Paint Creek region is at the edge of the Appalachian Plateau and marks the boundary between the hilly eastern section of the state and the flatter western portion. It is believed that glaciers caused this boundary line seen today. One stream near the Paint Creek Lake State Park was blocked by glacial ice and reversed direction, rapidly cutting the 75-foot gorge seen today. Sullivantis, an extremely rare wildflower in Ohio, blooms in the gorge in mid-summer. Other natural attractions include Osprey and bald eagle that have been observed over the lake. A variety of wildlife find habitats in and around the Paint Creek region.
Another attraction is the Seven Caves. Seven Caves is a beautiful
area that has been described as “Ohio’s Wonderland.” Rocky Fork Creek
has carved chasms, caves, cliffs waterfalls and charming grottos into
the area’s limestone deposits. 7 Caves is privately owned and open
year round. Three self-guided trails take enthusiasts through the
caves, across the top of the cliffs and then down to the creek. There
is a snack and souvenir shop and picnic areas for your enjoyment.
