Hillsboro

Hillsboro is named for it’s location among the high lands of the Scioto and Little Miami Rivers. Hillsboro is a progressive city of 6,235 people located in southern Ohio. David Hays was appointed to select a county seat for Highland County in 1807 and he chose Hillsboro because of its central location and easy access to Columbus, Cincinnati, and Dayton.

Many distinguished citizens have come from Hillsboro. Dr. Samuel Hibben, the modern-lighting specialist who created lighting for the Washington Monument, Statue of Liberty, New York World’s Fair, and the Holland Tunnel. Another prominent native of Hillsboro is Hugh Fullerton, the organizer of the Baseball Writers Association who exposed the “Black Sox” scandal of 1919. Other citizens of Hillsboro include Eliza Jane Thompson, the Mother of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union in Hillsboro.

Hillsboro was virgin forest in 1807, but today it is the center of government and commerce in Highland County with wide-tree lined streets with attractive homes and friendly citizens make Hillsboro an eminently satisfying place to live and work.
